Permanent residency opportunities for nurses in Australia
A recent study by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research has found that one of the qualifications to have in the future is nursing.
Careers in nursing are set to boom
Demand for midwifery and nursing professions are estimated to grow significantly.
Between 2017 and 2024 it is predicted that 4.1 million jobs will become available, with more than half of these jobs thanks to the retiring baby boomer generation. At the same time demand in both the midwifery and nursing professions are estimated to grow by 2.5% a year.
15,400 jobs for midwifery and nursing professionals will become available each year.
It’s expected that 15,400 jobs for midwifery and nursing professionals will become available each year, with 49.6% of these jobs coming from replacement demand.
While this is driven in part by the retiring baby boomers, it also reflects how strong the outlook for the healthcare sector. Increased government expenditure in residential care, social assistance and the implementation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme are all contributors.
These initiatives are also driving growth in other complementary roles including welfare support workers and personal carers.
Immigration is crucial to meet demand
Australia is struggling to find enough people with the requisite skills to apply.
Given these growth expectations, the government is leveraging its skilled immigration program to meet demand. This program allows for 128,000 migrants with skills that are in high demand to access permanent residency in Australia. One of the skills with the highest demand is nursing, with 17,300 places reserved for registered nurses in the skilled migration scheme. Visas issued under the Skilled Independent stream do not require migrants to obtain state or territory sponsorship, which means they can choose to live and work wherever they choose in Australia.
While there are opportunities available, Australia is struggling to find enough people with the requisite skills to apply. Under the immigration process, interested people demonstrate an Expression of Interest which outlines their skills and qualifications. Applicants who qualify for the visa are then invited to apply by the Department of Home Affairs. But as at 11 September this year, only 413 nurses had been invited to apply for the visa.
This represents a significant opportunity for anyone who has the necessary skills, qualifications and English language proficiency. If you’re interested in working in Australia, partner with an agency who can assist you every step of the way.
