The construction industry bands together for safety
According to Safe Work Australia, 190 workers were killed on the job in 2017. The majority were in high-risk industries like transport, warehousing and construction. The construction industry accounts for 63.7% of serious workers compensation claims and 62% of worker fatalities in Australia.
Building awareness of an issue is an essential step in prevention. With this in mind, Lendlease has enlisted the help of mothers to highlight workplace safety and make sure it’s front of mind.
It is also important to make sure workers are aware that they’re not alone. This is the purpose behind Hope Assistance Local Tradies (HALT) an organisation that reminds tradespeople that they’re not alone by hosting breakfasts at building sites, hardware stores and other places frequented by tradies and labourers. HALT also directs them to resources and support services when they need it.
SafeWork NSW has introduced its Building and Work Health and Safety Sector Plan, which is designed to eliminate workplace deaths, serious injuries and illnesses in the building and construction industry. The Plan aims to reduce fatalities by 20% and serious injuries, illnesses and musculoskeletal injuries by 30%.
A key component of the plan is a collaboration between peak industry bodies, unions and government agencies. Together they will establish strategic partnerships to develop and execute safety initiatives that include training and assessment for those performing high-risk work. Licences will also be required when working with specific equipment like cranes, forklifts and pressure equipment.
Prevention is essential for all workplace injuries but is particularly important when it comes to suicide. Some industries have higher rates of suicide, like construction. This led to the creation of Mates in Construction a charity that develops programs to support workers and employers prevent suicide. It also has a 24/7 helpline and provides a Life Skills Toolbox training program to apprentices and young workers. They go onsite to teach colleagues how to recognise if a worker isn’t coping and help them seek assistance from social workers or psychologists.
While workers are onsite or in various locations, it can be difficult to track their mental wellbeing. That’s where an app like MateCheck comes in handy. It allows workers to track their own wellbeing while providing employers with feedback. Workers can also access confidential support services to assist them when they need it most.
