Srishti’s career change success story
Mar 01, 2023
Srishti Sharma

Last year, Srishti Sharma took up a role as a Data Systems Officer with Macutex, a Melbourne based building consultancy that specialises in data driven solutions. It was somewhat of a sideways step for Srishti, whose experience to that point had primarily been in construction.

"Previously I was a construction estimator,” she explains. "I worked with a residential builder and later a construction company. But then I had to have surgery, and had to go back to India for a time. When I came back, I started looking for a job. I got in touch with Bayside, and that's how I met David.”

David Pham is a senior consultant working in engineering and infrastructure recruitment for Bayside Group. Taking a high-level view of Srishti’s skill set and experience, he was able to identify transferrable skills, and think laterally about what opportunities there might be for her.

“Even though  Srishti’s background was in construction, she had qualifications and experience in project management,” David recalls. “Strong administrative skills, and soft skills like negotiation, leadership and problem-solving. There was a lot to suggest Srishti could transition to a different kind of role.”

"Initially I had applied for a job as an estimator for a window company,” says Srishti. “David asked if I had any interest in potentially broadening my experience working in a different industry. I wasn't sure, but he offered to help me. Within days he came back to me with a few options.”

One of those options was a contract role with Macutex. Even though the company services the construction industry, its emphasis on data means its day-to-day work is more in the realm of asset management. Srishti identified that role as something she’d be interested in pursuing.

Guided by David’s support and advice, she put in her application, and was successful in first getting an interview and ultimately landing the role.

“I was impressed by how committed David was to helping me,” she says. “That builds trust."

Moving from contract to full-time

It wasn’t all smooth sailing for Srishti however. Contract work can ebb and flow depending on project and business needs at a given time. Sure enough, as the conclusion of Srishti’s contract was approaching, the possibility arose that she would need to move on to a new role.

"I was very stressed,” she recalls. “So I called David and he said ‘I’m going to knock on every door for you.’ It was a big stress buster for me, to know he was there, and that Bayside was there. David was a big part of me jumping from a contract role to a full-time role."

“I spoke to the company,” says David, “to explore what options there might be for Srishti to continue in the role, or a similar role. I also reassured her that her skills and experience made her a desirable candidate and that Macutex could see the value of what she brought to the business.”

"He would just calm me down,” says Srishti. "He would assure me there are many opportunities and that he was going to help me. David as the recruiter knew who to talk to, where to apply, how to apply. I had a trust in him, because he did what he said he would.

“He also had a personal touch, pushing me, encouraging me, and appreciating my skills. I have not seen recruiters doing that before."

That Srishti was able to secure the permanent role with Macutex is one of those win-win situations that recruiters like David thrive on.

“It’s always so fulfilling to match the right candidate with the right employer and see how they both benefit,” he says.

“Srishti’s story shows the value of developing those transferrable skills, and thinking outside of the box when it comes to taking the next step in your career. It also demonstrates that contract work can be a viable option for people looking to change careers or develop.”

"I didn’t know if I would enjoy something away from construction," Srishti says. "But I’m very happy where I am. I’m so thankful I came across Bayside. I even referred two of my friends."
