The opportunity:
This is a client-side Design Manager role supporting one of Australia’s most significant long-term infrastructure programs within a nationally critical trade and logistics precinct.
 
You will play a pivotal role in shaping and delivering a multi-billion-dollar infrastructure program that will support future trade growth and economic development across Victoria.
 
Working within a high-performing infrastructure delivery environment, you will lead the planning, coordination, and management of complex civil and maritime design activities across multiple work-streams, to ensure engineering excellence, integration, and delivery certainty from early works through to completion.
 
About the role:
Reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager, the Design Manager will play a key role in the planning and design management of a portfolio of critical infrastructure projects across the full program life-cycle. This role is ideal for someone who can operate at a strategic level while ensuring robust technical design outcomes are delivered through external consultants and delivery partners.
 
Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead and coordinate infrastructure planning and design management across major program elements
  • Develop and implement design management frameworks, plans, and technical governance processes
  • Manage design development, technical due diligence and multidisciplinary design consultancies
  • Review and provide advice on technical studies and design outputs to senior leadership and governance groups
  • Support procurement strategy development and contribute to tender documentation and technical evaluation processes
  • Collaborate with contractors, consultants, and key stakeholders to optimise design outcomes and delivery approaches
  • Ensure robust document control and compliance with program systems and standards
  • Support asset handover, digital design requirements, and transition to operations activities
  About You:
You are a capable and confident engineering and design professional who can balance big picture thinking with detailed technical oversight, engaging effectively with consultants to deliver design outcomes aligned to the asset owner’s requirements.
 
Ideally, you will bring:
  • Tertiary qualification in Engineering or related discipline
  • Proven and demonstrated experience delivering complex infrastructure projects
  • Strong experience managing consultants and contractors through design and delivery phases
  • Sound understanding of alternative contracting models and design management within them
  • Strong commercial awareness and understanding of infrastructure delivery environments
  • Ability to interpret and communicate complex technical information clearly to diverse stakeholders
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capability
  • Ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively in a complex program environment
